An introduction to Jane Jacobs

In this lecture, Fredrik Skåtar gives an introduction to Jane Jacobs: her four conditions for a healthy and diverse city maintained from the bottom up. Then, we look at her personal story and findings, her observations and descriptions of activity and architecture in urban public spaces. Finally, the lecture discusses Jacobs’ legacy and influence today.
Architecture is sustainable

Driven by climate change and public demand for climate-friendly architectural solutions, sustainability is ever more present in society. But what does the term mean for architecture? Arguably, sustainable architecture focuses primarily on technical-environmental solutions, which is, of course, valuable. But is there not a risk of forgetting the full scope of the term, such as cultural, societal, and artistic sustainability?
Flanders: the Flemish Diamond

This lecture introduces the findings from Fredrik Skåtar’s many field trips to the region. The lecture looks at long-term, architecturally qualitative, policy-driven urban visions focusing on Antwerp and Ghent.

Artistic expression, mood, and the sensation of well-being and identity are architectural components that are hard to prove and defend. Consequently, they are also challenging to create and given their vague properties; they risk neglect. Yet, aren’t these facets the very driving force of architecture? So how can architects defend and promote them?
Upgraded tools

On future architectural and design strategies amid rapid technological development. Constantly challenged by new digital design methods, the debate gets confused. Are these new tools redefining architecture and design? No, not at all. Mastering the architectural profession is complex enough; we don't need to add additional functions to it, no matter how exciting a specific technology might be. What we need to do, though, is to discuss our attitudes towards technology and, thus, how it could convert our ideas into real projects.
