TEACHING
Fredrik Skåtar is an educator in both the academic and commercial sectors. He has been a lecturer and guest critic at the architecture and design schools LTH-A and IKDC, Lund, Sweden, an adjunct professor at the design departments in Dessau and Magdeburg, Germany, and the Free University of Bolzano, Italy. Currently, he is an adjunct professor at the Dessau Institute of Architecture (DIA), Germany.

teaching philosophy statement

Fredrik Skåtar’s teaching concepts are strongly tied to his research, emphasising the importance of understanding the needs of architecture’s users. Consequently, he focuses primarily on discussing seemingly vague facets such as architectural moods, a sense of well-being or artistic appreciation. Similarly, Fredrik Skåtar strives to understand each student’s ambitions and potentials, enabling them to gain experience in idea development and project processes.

Cultural sustainability
Master's thesis studio 2023-2024 at DIA Dessau

Addressing sustainability is unavoidable, but what does it mean for architecture and the everyday lives of communities, people, and their shared places? To address this, we can use the overarching term cultural sustainability, encompassing both technological solutions and architectural complexities.

- inclusive design for the cognitively impaired
Many children and young people struggle with health conditions and physical or cognitive impairments. The school staff, pupils, and parents often know what they need, but how would it be designed, assembled, visualised and communicated?
Master thesis studio 2022-2023

Vagueness discusses architecture’s crucial essentials: the hard-to-prove artistic, poetic, and user-focused facets. Guided by that discussion as a framework, the participants create a collage of their identity and personal geographies as a foundation for developing a design philosophy, site and program.

Europark Linkeroever

is a project at the DIA Dessau 2022, working on Antwerp's left-bank, based on guidelines created by the Bouwmeester's workshop in the fall of 2021. The project aims at creating ideas for a future revitalisation, based on the community's needs and identity.

OASIS

Oasis is a project where one spatial intervention generates discussions on larger design scales and critical societal issues. To revitalise a forgotten corner in the city, the students create a catalyst, which has a positive effect locally and city-wide. The course aims for a philosophy of slow transformation, adding interventions in the city step by step.

Fredrik Skåtar has conducted the OASIS course in various formats since 2020, at the Dessau department of design and at the Dessau Institute of Architecture.

Form workshop / Grasshopper

The FORM WORKSHOP focuses on geometry, material and reality conversion, aided by Rhinoceros and its algorithmic extension Grasshopper — a tool that can automatically perform a vast series of modelling tasks in real-time. The workshop is goal-oriented which means that, after the introductory tutorials, every participant is working on their individual ideas.

Fredrik Skåtar has conducted the FORM WORKSHOP in various formats since 2012, at the LTH-Lund School of Architecture, Dessau department of design, The free university of Bolzano and at the Dessau Institute of Architecture.

townhouse: culturally sustainable urban housing

Wouldn’t many people like to have their own house and their own garden and still live in an urban context? One can reach these goals through townhouse architecture, which maintains the urban structure and simultaneously offers private housing and property, simultaneously part of a community.
AUTOMOTIVE ALGORITHMIC DESIGN

In 2018, Fredrik Skåtar designed a Grasshopper (parametric/algorithmic design for Rhinoceros) workshop focusing on the automotive design studios. During sessions at Hyundai and Volkswagen, the course has been continuously refined to meet recurring questions from this specific field.
THE LIGHT PROJECT

The development of new light technologies and materials is rapid. To what extent are these innovations used by the industry? Could new digital fabrication methods contribute to new designs? LIGHT is a course concept for both product designers and architects.
Elevator pitch

An "elevator pitch" is a summary used to quickly and simply define a concept and its value proposition. We work goal-oriented with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
FORM / TRANSFORM / TRANSCRIBE

is a workshop exploring geometry, tessellations and polyhedra. The participants train their geometrical skills, make physical and digital experimental models, and discuss how they could apply the shapes architecturally and artistically based on precedents.
